Tanah Rata is the administrative capital of Cameron Highlands and this is where the main bus station is also located. Most of the government departments are also located in Tanah Rata.
Until the early mid 90's, majority of the hotels of Cameron Highlands was located in and around Tanah Rata. Ever since tourism industry boomed in the mid to late 90s, a lot of newer hotels were established in Brinchang.
The shoplots along the main street were build in the 1930 during the British occupation. Most of the shoplots still retain their original look. Newer shoplots were built to cater for the expanding population. Royal Lily Park or Taman Royal Lily as its known in Bahasa Malaysia is located about 500 metres from the main street. This area has got shoplots as well as apartments for the local residence.
The latest development in Tanah Rata is the Cameron Fair Shopping Mall. This is currently under construction and is expected to complete in early 2017.
One of the most prominent landmark in Tanah Rata is the Convent School was built in 1935. Situated on a hill overlooking the town, the Convent is often overlooked by many visitors.
