NATIONA PARK - 2004/12/23 09:13
I'm happy that CH will be a national park, but is it just a 'name' only or they really 'enforce' it as long as it last....How's y'all point of view?

Historically, Cameron Highlands district was declared a reserve for deer in 1958 and in 1962 protection was extended to all animals and birds. However, on 15 Feb 1962 the protected area status of Cameron Highlands was legally struck off. This means that at one stroke, the protected montane area (defined as areas above 900m elevation) for Peninsular Malaysia is reduced by 80%!
In a recent Seminar on Sustainable Development of Cameron Highlands: Issues and Challenges 11-12 Dec 2004, Brinchang, Cameron Highlands organized by Prof. Chan Ngai Weng (USM) and the British Council, a 10 point summary was put forward by the participants. One of which includes the call for a national park, and this was lauded by the Member of Parliament for Cameron Highlands who officiated the seminar.
Check out the news articles below: 1. http://www.reach.org.my/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=152&Itemid=56 2. http://www.reach.org.my/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=154&Itemid=56
Now, it is up to us (concerned individual of Cameron Highlands) to further the realisation of this effort to ensure the national park does not become a "Paper Park".
Would any one out there, be brave enough to take the lead towards coordinating a concerted effort to garner public support to expedite the process from a grass-root level to ensure this initiative is kept alive, until the point where things need to be formalized at higher (state/national) level? Strike the iron while its still hot!!!

WC, if you have pledged 100% support to CH National Park, does this mean you are taking the lead to garner support to make this national park a reality?
Good on u!!!
What is your first steps? How are you going to start addressing the public to get support? What plans do you have?
Do let me know, I am sure that other too would be behind you if you take this up, since you had started this posting.
Why ask admins for support to 'kick start' it? Admins are admins, they are not involved in the forum discussion. I have yet to see any admin getting involved in forums, in any websites.
So dont keep me waiting too long... I am sure all those interested will bel 'excited' as I am to know what plans you are propogating for this campaign

WC, how are putting names and info into a forum would help make CH a National Park? Are you going to use this list of names by sending it to a particular local authority showing that Malaysian want CH to be a National Park? Or are you going to send it to the newspapers? to a Ministry?
As I has asked you before..... what R your plans?
Admins can join in for support, no doubt, but u were asking them to kick start this campaign.
So, I take it YOUhave decided to start this campaign. Good. But do reply and let me know what is your proposed line of action and how you plan to achieve it.
I'll only put my name in the support CH as a National Park topic if I see it would lead to something other than posting my personal and contact details for all to see.

it's your wish whether u want to sign-in to support it, and who knows, it might get the local authority's attention. We're just ordinary civilans. This is what we can do, get a group to sign-in, support CH National Park.
THis is a Cameron Highlands website...

most of us is just a common Malaysian citizen. This is at least a common citizen can do to show support to CH National Park. Of course we all hope local authorities can implement CH as national park and maintain it. This is what Malaysians wants.

Re:NATIONA PARK - 2006/06/02 08:59
According to IUCN (1994), there are several categories of protected area, National park - which is classified as Caterory II, is protected area managed mainly for ecosystem protection and recreation.
Thus, is CH going to be nominated as a 'National Park'? Or Protected area category IV (protected landscape - protected area managed mainly for landscape conservation and recreation) or category V (managed resource protected area - protected area managed mainly for the sustainable use of natural ecosystem).
They are DIFFERENT!!! National park is more to conserve flora and fauna such as Taman Negara. While the latters are more to sustainble development.

Hi all,
Here's my 2 cents worth! Dream on everyone if you intend the government to catch on the idea of National Park or whatever park, not as long the existing government is in power.
Look at all the places throughout M'sia, the beautiful limestone hills in Ipoh, the beautiful beaches along Melaka, "forest reserve" in many places etc are going or have all long gone.
You can shout, you can pray, you can do whatever you want but nothing is going to stop the on-going development that is happening IF the authorities are not serious about it. Why should they be serious about it, when there is revenue to be generated from development.
Remember the statement STOP HILLSLOPES DEVELOPMENT! These developments are still going on and people are swallowing it gullibly and still nothing can be done. The authorities must be very weak, since no action is taken after the "rebuke" from the PM. Perhaps they are taking us all for a ride.
Now the only way to ever protect or conserve CH in the long term is definately not via the existing government but via Trust or Foundation created by the rakyat & this is not managed by anyone or party from the government. Funds collected via fund raising will be used exclusively in the procurement & maintenance of virgin forest surrounding CH and the Trust of Foundation will be SOLE custodian and managers of estate. This will ensure the long term sustainability of the environment.
Ironically this should all be done by the powers that be, whom we have given our vote in the last general election. However, it seems this has failed and like all things in Malaysia will continue to fail on an on-going basis. For example issues with dirty public toilets, maintenance free culture, speeding buses and many more trivial issues which should have been resolved decades ago and we have not even touched on economics etc yet. Perhaps it is time for a smarter government to come in power to serve & protect the interest of the rakyat, and not some other party.
Cheers J.M. Read
