 Re:CH's Top 5 Eateries - 2006/04/05 15:45 i heard Highland Rest was closed? R they relocated in somewhere else? i plan my 2 days trip to CH staying in Father Guesthouse but they are not accept advance booking,hopefully i still have chance to stay there.

 Re:CH's Top 5 Eateries - 2006/04/05 17:38 Yes, the Highlands Restaurant is closed. I was there last Thursday night hoping to get a taste of their famous charcoal steamboat... but the stall was being renovated. Dunno where they went to though.

KHM had the best looking & largest strawberries I saw duing the trip. They also put more into the box for RM$10 as compared to those sold at the markets/stores. Their ice cream was very tasty though the texture was in the form of "ice flakes". Pity those grapes hanging around were not for comsumption......

T-Cafe had a homely atmosphere rather than posh. Reminds me of the common living We had the lasagne which tasted wierd as its not the usual tomato paste or spagetti sauce filling. Think they had carrots in there. Also tried their fish & chips.... also kinda strange tasting as they put some herb into the fish or batter.... Their scones was one of the better items. Apple pie was ordinary. (I still say Smokehouse serves the best scones so far, though the price is many times more ex.)

The Indian stall No. 14 .... to be honest, they had the worst chapati I'd tasted. Maybe not so the chapati, but the gravy (curry & dhal) that came with it.

Zainab Sam's food was alright. Not fantastic but ok for that price.

Also, we'll be staying in Cluny Lodge. Any idea whether it is within walking distance to Brinchang town?

I stayed in Cluny Lodge last Nov. Its quite a long walk to Brinchang. Think at least 10 mins (my wife says 15 mins)but if the weather is good still ok lar. However be very careful as some portion of the road is very narrow (just nice for one car). But not to walk at night as its very very dark.

I've heard a lot of good comments about KHM. Could anybody guide me the way to go to this place. I'll be visiting CH in 2 weeks time and will be staying at Tanah Rata (somewhere near Mardi). Pse dont tell me it is near Taman Sedia coz I dont know where Taman Sedia is.

 Re:CH's Top 5 Eateries - 2006/05/31 18:36 Very easy when you mentioned 'Taman Sedia' because it is located off road just out of Tanah Rata in the direction of Brinchang. There are many ways to enter but if you come from Tanah Rata, look out for when you reach a sharp left bend slightly ascending. Exactly at that bend, you go right at a T-junction. A signboard will tell you that leads to 'Taman Sedia' and if not mistaken there is a big old billboard for "Iris Hotel". Turn in that junction and later make a left turn. You can't miss KHM. It is a big bungalow sitting on a hill on the left. The short service road of about 20 metres slopes very upwards to the porch of the bungalow and usually you have to park your car outside due to limited space. That house belongs to KHM owner and the farm is just beside, occupying the large garden. Remember to say that you learn about KHM from this forum.

#1 - Mayflower Chinese restaurant with Steamboat (RM12)and Chinese dishes (Main street of Tanah Rata)- the portions, taste and value tops the other chinese restaurants on the same street. Recommendations include fried kailan and Kong bo chicken (Chicken with dried chilli) mushroom and tofu soup and their steamboat

#2 - Yong Teng Cafe (Opposite Maybank in Tanah Rata)
Great pancakes (peach, strawberry, apple, pineapple, banana each at RM2.5)THe pancakes are the real authentic type...tested and approved by my husband who calls them french crepes...he is French...trust him. They also sell everything under the sun eg hotdogs, chicken rice, burgers, local fare. The cooks are a deaf/mute couple who are very friendly.

#3 - Kumar's restaurant on main street tanah rate for great naans and tandoori chicken. You get a naan set (naan, tandoori chicken, rice, Dhal and curry for RM7) They have also cheese naan. Very filling

#4 - Brinchang's Jew May (something...I forgot the last character)Chinese restaurant opposite Jasmine Hotel. It has good Ba Kut Teh (Pork Rib soup)for RM15 enough for 2 persons. Good for the good weather!

#5 - Scone set at Cameronian Inn (at Tanah Rata behind Maybank)at RM10 you get 2 scones, strawberry jam, butter, cream and a pot of tea enough for 2 persons. The scones are light and nice and arrive warm on your tray. You can have the scones in a nice garden!The staff and manager are very nice and always have tips for your trip.

I am going to CH this Saturday and I would like to try the steamboat at Mayflower restaurant which you have mentioned in the TOP 5 list.

Is this a traditional charcoal steamboat? And did the restaurant provide tomyam soup for the soup base?

im planning to go to ch with my coursemate from KUSTEM..
is there any places that could link our trip with academic lesson..?
maybe any research center..
such as mardi or anything..
any body..?
