My CH holiday - 2005/03/21 17:50
Just came back yesterday, below are my report and if now who say CH is a boring place, I will give them a hard lesson Friday, 18/03/2005 1st Day - Started our journey 1 hour late because waited for my sister in law family @ 8am ex JB. 5 of us in my lovely waja 4 adults and a kid headed straight to the NS highway. A few stop to strecth our leg and hand, 1st stop @ Restaurant Jejantas - Ayer Keroh bought some A&W snacks for a short break. Rest for 30 minutes and countinued our journey to north, next stop @ Rawang R&R - just for toilet and wished to exit Bidor for the Duck drumstick noodles instead of those R&R food. And we managed to stop @ 1:15pm for the lunch break. Yummy noodles but a little bit pricey. Bought some snack and sweet guava @ RM 5.00/kg. This reminded me for the Tapah R&R for the local fruits stall, so we stopped again for it. We bought again the guava and sweet “jambu air” this time. Proceed to next exit @ Simpang Pulai instead of Tapah to try out the new road. The road condition (~ 70km to Brinchang) to CH 1st 10km just like the normal road but when you see the 40km/hour beware for the twist and turn + climbing, lasted for about 5km, I guess. Middle part of the journey even twist and turn but it turn out to be a fun ride and look out for valley - magnificient view. That last for 35km before you hit the 1st T junction, turn right toward Kg. Raja. Oh, yes before you reach the junction you will start to see some small scale farms with stall to sell their vege and flower and that indicated we are on the highland! The third part of the road will be winding but if your drive slowly show be OK but beware for those aged Land Rover with the "CH" sign, look old but powerful engine with good setup of suspension system, coupled with experienced driver. After passing thru the 1st township, Kg. Raja stopped @ the Ee Fung Gu, supposed for the bee farm but turned out to be a small market for flower and vege. Watch was showing 4:15pm (it takes 1 hour 15 minutes! to reach this stop from the Simpang Pulai). Having some snack - Strawberry and the shake, fried mushroom and roses - 1/2 dozen for RM 1! Do you believe that? Just bought 1 dozen for my lovely wife, wanted to buy more but my heart tell me - Hey Brinchang may be even cheaper, turn out to be the other way round. On the way to our hotel-Villa Dahlia passed thru many stalls selling strawberry and sightseing places as stated in the map which we bought RM 4.00 at the stall. After Brinchang town it takes another 5 minutes to reach to the hotel. Outlook for the hotel not bad afterall is a apartment, we took the 2 rooms apartment @ RM 270.00 which I bought @ cuti.com. Just show the voucher and they will pass you the key, check out the apartment not bad either with all room with bathroom attached. Took our shower and head back to Brinchang town and look out for the steamboat dinner and as planned the Pasar Malam hang out. Despite of Friday, the pasar malam was quite crowded and only managed to get a parking near the Rosa Pasedena Hotel (Located behind the shop lot). Strolling to look for the highland restaurant and got them but the apperance looks run down no customer at all whereas the other were full packed, so opted their neighbour stall - Foong Lum and again turn out to be a bad decision. Ordered 3 pax for the steamboat as we would like to try out other dishes. We ordered a plate of fried green vege + fried rice and "yee mee" (small serving) and total bill was RM 70++. FYI, they charged extra of RM1/person if you like to have tomyam and chicken soup steamboat. Head for the Pasar Malam and while strolling back to see the Highland restaurant to our surprise, all the tables were occupied and the steamboat was fire up by charcoal with the a high chimney. I told my wife tomorrow evening we must have our dinner here. At the pasar malam, most of them were selling the repeating items for instance vege, strawberry, T-shirt, flower and Honey. But that is what make them so famous. For the honey, I recommended the Apahli Honey (not sure about the name), but you can’t missed it as only one 1 stall selling the honey straight from the hives. Remember buy 1 free 1 small jug @ RM 18.00. I use to drink honey so I can regconised the taste which is honey with sugar and which one is 100% pure honey. Good buy for those honey lover, by the way they also selling the comb hives and you can sample it, Yummy! Oh yes the weather not as cold as before (20 years back), trust me ,you don’t need sweater nor wind breaker! Well even @ evening. Bought some T-shirt + strawberry + cheap key chain at the Pasar Malam. Headed back to hotel but gut feeling say not full enough for the dinner, stopped at the malay stall next to the pasar malam, bought 30pcs @ Rm 0.40/pc + ketupat, ended up a good supper at the hotel with my sister in law family. Try to get sleep @ 11:00pm after ~ 8.5 hours driving but guess what? Someone organized the party at the hall just 1 floor below our apartment with dancing and loud music (Tamil song) which disturbed our sleep very much. So I went down (the apartment do not have telephone) to launch the complaint at the office, and the “Jaga” quickly went up to inform them to stop the activity because is already 11:15pm! Finally the activity stopped @ 11:35pm. The management really disappointed us but hey! we were not gonna let the incident spoilt our holiday mood. I will write to cuti.com for the official complaint. Note : Please wear double clothing before you sleep, because you won’t know the temperature drop very much at very early in the morning.
Saturday, 19/03/2005 Woke up at 6:30pm, while the others still in sweet dream. Standing in front of the window which facing the main road and golf course, wow freezing when the wind blow. Took my sweater and the car key to drive off to Brinchang to buy breakfast for them. Very less traffic early in the morning and few eating place already started their business. Opted for cheap food at the hawker nearby the Brinchang market (not the pasar malam but the real market – selling meat and vege one). Take away 5 nasi lemak with fried egg + curry puff + sweet cake and went to other stall to buy roti canai, 5 pcs @ RM 0.80/pc. Well the apartment didn’t provide any breakfast. Today is a very important day where we need to cover many areas, so started off @ 8:30am with the Kasimanis Strawberry farm which is about 300meter away from our hotel but turn down with the environment so head to Castus valley (as recommended in the forum). Paid RM4.00 for adult and kid RM 2.00 for the ticket. Yes, indeed a good place for visit. Despite the name called Castus, we found out a lot of flowers and spices which never in our mind so beautiful it planted on the highland. Besides those giant castus there were also some very juicy tomato plant (I guess that one for display only, you can’t eat because to big and juicy, (I guess must be some kind of chemical to make it so red and big) and vege plantation visit was included. Oh yes! remember to try out the sweet potatoes and sweet potatoes ball near the main enterance. Next stop at Brinchang farms for strawberry, about 2 Km from the Castus Valley junction heading Kg. Raja, the farm with the signboard “Pluck your Own Strawberry”. Buy those ready @ RM 20.00/kg but pluck you own RM 30.00/kg, well the another way round in Australia. Fine with us for the price to pluck you own experience especially for the kid, minimum 1 kg, the signboard written only 2 adults allowed to pluck for 1 session, but they allow all of us to pluck the strawberry, turn out to be a pleasant experience for all of us. We spend 20 minutes to get 1.2Kg of strawberry. Note: Don’t think about to bring home the strawberry because they could only last for 1 day or 2 before they get soften. Worth to try this activity even at the higher price for what you paid at the Pasar Malam. Last stop for the morning at the Butterly farms (another 2 Km ahead (Kg raja direction) from the strawberry farm). Paid Rm 3.00 for adult and Rm 1.50 for the kid. I found the insects were much more interesting that the butterly, you can even have the chance tp touch the most fatal spider. A gourp of Singaporean were so excited when the saw big size beatles. To me, what lah you people beatles only what, back to my kampung even can find bigger than this! Since not much to see we only stopped for 30 minutes and looked at my watch figures shown 11:45am, and almost time to check out at the hotel. On the way back, something strike my mind that one of the forummer did mention about the Strawberry jam @ Tmn. Sedia, saw the signboard and turn left to see if any chance to sample the jam and it turn out to be one of the best place to visit in Cameron Highland! Cruise along the golf course and reached the very mini roundabout with the signboard “Honk your vechicle”, go to 9 o’clock direction and go straigth 50 meter then turn right to cross a short bridge and you will see a British Colonial house on top of the hill, at the second junction turn left, there is the KHM. Nice view, something that you might think how’s British enjoyed their afternoon tea during those day. They have the small café just beside the strawberry farm with the table and chair where you can enjoy the weather and surrounded by the strawberry plant while taking the latest product – Strawberry Ice cream. We ordered 3 ice cream @ RM 2.00/bowl and 2 strawberry milk shake @ RM 3.00/drink. They also provide FOC biscuit with strawberry jam which I found a good strategy to sell their Strawberry jam @ RM 6.00/can (labeled RM 6.50/can). To at least we bought 6 bottles at once. This place was not too “tourisity” even though the business was not bad at the time we were there. I would highly recommended this place to you guy who really wanted to experience Cameron Higland the British way. Well we were actually 1 hour late for check out because the strawberry ice cream and milk shake. We checked out @ 1:00pm and drove 50 meter away to check in to a much more classy hotel – Casa Del Rosa hotel. Initially when I bought the package 2 rooms for 1 night during the cuti cuti malaysia road show @ RM 160.00/room/night, I did notice the Villa Dahlia was so close to each other. Well later I found out the rate I took was a steal where I saw the other was paying RM 198.00/room/night. After settle down, at about 2:00pm we were rushing to have our lunch at Tanah Rata. From the hotel to Tanah Rata was about 5 minutes, the same problem parking! managed to get the parking at the far end of the shops. Well not bad at all, at least we have the chance to check out the shop 1 by 1. Finally we decided to opt for the western food @ T-café (also recommended in the forum). The shop was located upstair of the fast food chain – Marry Brown, the only thing spoilt the café was the construction going on in front of them (I guess they were constructing car park building). The air and noise pollutions were the bad part. We ordered the tea, scones, apple pie, steak as well as the curry noddles. Good food especially the scones and the curry noddles. We did buy some T-shirt at one of the shop which we found the quality is much better than those selling at the Brinchang Pasar Malam but of course dearer by few ringgit. After the shoping and lunch we were heading to the Bharat Tea House and Plantation, further down to Ringlet (5km from Tanah Rata). I noticed the main different between Tanah Rata and Brinchang was Tanah Rata has more foreign. Another place where you shouldn’t miss, the view was so magnificient especially the moment the Sun shined thru the tea valley from 1 corner to the other corner. You will have chance to touch but not pluck the raw tea leave. They are also having a café at the enterance for promoting their tea, small pot @ RM 6.00. After visited the plantation and drank our lovely tea we shot back to Tanah Rata to see anything more to offer, and we ended up at the play ground (in front of the Hospital). The play ground was very well maintained and I saw the Clock tower still standing firmly on the ground which I took the same photo 20 years ago. I took the nostalgic photo again but this round with my wife. This clock tower reminded me very much on those day where my parent brought 4 of us (my brothers) took the same photo at this clock tower. Well all my brothers were grown up, so the chances to take the same photo at the same location is a difficult task. After the kid enjoyed himself for the playground for 1 hour, we headed back to our hotel and get ready for the steamboat dinner, remember the high chimney steamboat! Taking a shower at our hotel and took a small nap, at the same time enjoying the hotel room environment, afterall it’s call “House of Roses”. At 6:30pm we when for the Brinchang again and we straight away went to the Highland restautrant. I need to mention again the parking lot was just to little to compare the tourist volume. At the restaurant, I asked the boss how much per head, he asked me back how’s many of my group and I told him 4 adults and a kid but I would like to order only 3 pax but his reply if 3 pax charged at RM 14.00/head and 4 pax or more @ RM 12.00/head, so we went for the 4 pax as only paid extra of RM 6.00 to get 1 more! While we were waiting the steamboat , we saw some table already pre arrangged with food waiting for their pre booked customer. A little while the customers started flocked in, a group of tourist which follow the tour. In a shortwhile the restaurant was full. After waited for 15 minutes our long awaited charcoal steamboat served. The serving of the food was 10 times better than their neighbour and this tell us why they were so famous and packed with customer. In fact we realized the size of serving also much more bigger (well may be the 4 pax compare the previous dinner only 3 pax). The difference of the charcoal and the gas steamboat was if you cook the meat or the vege in the charcaol steamboat, both of the food won’t easily over cooked even the charcoal steamboat giving you the very hot boiling effect. We did some experiment , cook the vege for 5 minutes, to our surprise the vege still looks very green. I learned this during my kid time. We really enjoyed our meal and my sister in law ordered additional prawn and chicken , yes the seawater prawn, I was wondering “Are you nut? Eating prawn in highland? Well because of the foods were so good we finished everything on the table and at the same time we saw someone BYO some vege to cook at the steamboat and it was allowed. We quickly when out to bought some very cheap vege to cook, so remember next time went you visit to steamboat restaurant at Brinchang, buy some vege for yourself to cook at the steamboat. When comes to the billing , the lady boss forgot to bill the additional prawns and chicken meat, we found out when we were about to leave the restaurant. For being honest and appreciates their service for serving good steamboat we went back to pay the additional – RM 13.00 for the extra dishes. The lady boss was so happy when will went back to pay the differences. For sure the lady boss we remembered us. Before call it off for the day, we went round and round the Pasar Malam to see anything missed out. Finally we bought very cheap flower (remember the 1st stop @ Ee Feng Gu, cheaper if compare with Pasar Malam)+ vege + honey and many T-Shirt because this will be the last night for them to sell their product or else have to wait for next week Saturday night. Happily we leave the Pasar Malam – heading back to our hotel. The time was @ 9:00pm. My wife was busy packing up those flower and vege she bought while I was enjoying watching the astro program.
Sunday, 20/03/2005 Woke up @ 6:00 am because sleep earlier last evening, asked my wife to joint me for the breakfast but unfortunely the hotel still not ready for the breakfast as the voucher stated 7 am to 10 am. May be the cool climate make us hunger faster. So we drive off to Brinchang again for the breakfast, we opted for the Roti Canai and Tea, so so only but to at least we filled our stomach a bit and we were able to enjoy the cool climate early in the morning. We head back to our hotel @ 7am and managed to get some sleep till 8am before we went down for our breakfast. The hotel charged extra of RM 22.00 for the breakfast as the kid was not included for FOC. They served ala carte not buffet for that morning, what a dissapointment! We checked out @ 10am as we will head for Ipoh to hunt the bean sprout chicken. Guess what before we leave CH, again we visited the KHM for the ice cream and the milk shake, we just love the environment and the taste of the real strawberry! We were leaving the CH @ 10:30am and manage to reach Ipoh city @ 12 noon. To those who drive down thru SP, please use your engine brake together or else you may get brake pad burned. After reach Ipoh we manage to get the food but did not the famous one – Lo Wong. Only Onn Kei on for the lunch business. After the lunch we headed back to South and stopped at the “Guan Yin temple” along the Gopeng road. The temple offered the “Wishes tree” for the prayer. After all this we hit to the NS highway at 2:30pm and wanted to stop at the R&R toilet and petrol in Tapah but fully packed only managed to top up the petrol. We stop by PJ SS2 to visit my brother in law new house @ 4:00 pm and leaving KL @ 5:00 pm thru federal highway via Sg. Besi. Next stop at Yong Peng @ 7pmfor dinner – Foo Chow dishes! We managed to reach home 9:15pm. That’s our way of holiday.

Re:My CH holiday - 2005/03/25 16:34
Hi CY,
Good to know that you had a great time in the Highlands. When is your next trip? Please ensure that you visit the ‘mossy’ forest the next time around.
Reuben,
KHM is situated in between Tanah Rata and Brinchang at a small village called Taman Sedia, which is also famously known for their Agro tourism Homestay programs and of course their strawberries.
Cheers,

Re:My CH holiday - 2005/03/28 13:56
Due to high demand for better readable version, I've reattached the latest version of the write out which with more prgh and bigger font, so guy you all don't need to wear spec nor visit to your optician
Revised version : Friday, 18/03/2005 1st Day - Started our journey 1 hour late because waited for my sister in law family @ 8am ex JB. 5 of us in my lovely waja 4 adults and a kid headed straight to the NS highway.
Taking a shower at our hotel and took a short nap, at the same time enjoying the hotel room environment, afterall it’s call “House of Roses”. At 6:30pm we when for the Brinchang again and we straight away went to the Highland restautrant. I need to mention again the parking lot was just too little to compare the tourist volume.
May be the cool climate make us hungry faster.
After reach Ipoh we manage to get the food but not the famous one – Lo Wong.

Hello All,
I'm locking this thread now because it has gone way off the original topic. To Kimberlee and others, please post to a related topic or open a new one.
Thanks.
