RAfflesia - 2005/08/29 15:48
One of CH's most specific and rare species, also very much in danger, is the rafflesia. It is a parasite which grows on a host, very little is known to culture and conserve the plant. At Taman Negara and especially in Sabah there are some efforts to grow the plant artificially on a host.
One of the obvious threats are certainly the fact that the buds and petals can be used as a medicinal plant, a well-know target for unscrupulous business people.
Is there any project in CH that deals with protection and probably artificial cultivation of this rare wonder of nature...... a beauty that can turn into a beast within a few days......??
