Haze - 2005/03/24 12:20
In Singapore, we are experiencing a haze situation due to the warm weather. Can't see very far because of it.
Would like to know whether CH is also affected.
Thanks.

Re:Haze - 2005/03/24 14:06
Dear SinChee, Cameron Highlands is very special place.
As you know, we are higher up the mountain, so , ther haze here will be worse then the closes lowland cities. Dont bother to check with the heath department here. Water already messed up major, still no big deal.We highlanders get pretty pissed of especially when the is constant water cuts. No announcement of whats so ever, just cut.Sometimes it will be pissing down rain, but the tap wont have running water. So we become like cave men.....(I think , right now, everywhere in Malaysia is feeling the same thing...!!!) Dont bother mother nature... Any disease outbreak, only after somebody dies, then heath office will issue warning.. Friends come up with kids, get coxsakie virus from god knows up here!!!
It is not so wonderfull ANYMORE here.Only the weather is OK......

Do reply on this thing and verity what Paul Hewson had said. and tell you (Paul) in my place, which is still Malaysia, tap water running ok, and don't speak for the nation that we suffer all the same.

Appreciate your extended updates on the situation, Paul. But still my question on the haze still stand. Is CH experiencing this and also how bad is it.
Maybe in terms of the distance where one can see until. That would be helpful.
Still I don't envy your situation if the disruption happens frequently and without warning. Do try not to get caught in the midst of bathing when they cut-off the water supply.

Re:Haze - 2005/03/24 17:03
Dear SinChee,
The haze is made up of particles more than 10microns. Anything more than 10 microns tend to sink rather than float. Wind factor contributes to its dispersion.
Thus, suspended particles from fire / burning like the haze will always be worse in the lowlands esp. in valleys because the wind is usually not that strong. The smaller particles will make it to the upper stratospher but in lesser amount. If we combine the moisture / humidity factor then smaller particles will be bog down by mositure making it heavier and therby sinking by to the ground in the absence of wind.
For Cameron Highlands or any highlands to be enveloped in a haze, the following must be present 1. the particle size is very small ie. when there is intennse heat or fire, resulting in particles smaller than 10 microns 2. the absence of periodic rain 3. the absence of strong winds 4. when most of the lowlands is afftected resulting a build up effect from bottom.
But as for your question wheter CH was affected by the haze, heck... how would I know?

Dear Terrano,
Thanks for your scientific approach. As a layman, I find it a wee bit difficult to apply. Thus, I resorted to the old trusted method of asking people who may have visited CH or living in CH(older folks tends to use this method).
But still, thank you for your contribution. I may use this method, the next time, if I don't get a response to my question.

Re:Haze - 2005/03/25 09:08
@ SinChee,
In in my own layman words, for CH to be affected by the lowland haze, the lowland would have to be so hazy we would start calling it smog instead.
According to paul hewson the highlands will be more hazy (because the haze rises?) If this is indeed the case then the lowland will be clear instead of hazy.
Anyway, you can read his post and then see that he ends it with Only the weather is OK......

Hi Sin Chee,
The weather has been wet for the past four days, raining almost every afternoon. We also had a heavy downpour last night, since then the visibility has been fantastic. We could see Gunung Brinchang clearly this morning from our hotel’s balcony at Heritage. The air so fresh, the sun shinning, the birds chirping……. Wish you were here!

To Team Istari and Admin.
Thanks for the advise and I've taken note of it.
Yes, I do wish to be at CH right now. I really can't wait. One more week and I will be there.
I do hope they have completed the road works. A bit of an eye sore, but I undestand it is necessary for the safety of all road users.

Re:Haze - 2005/03/28 14:41
Hi SinChee,
I just returned from CH YESTERDAY (27th March) after a five-day stay and I have this to say:
WHAT HAZE???
Were you talking about KL??? Just kidding...
However, as Team Istari has mentioned, it has been raining quite regularly in CH - has been like that for the past one or two weeks, according to my aunt and a few locals. Ranged from light drizzles to full sheets of water - LOL. Rained mainly in the evenings for the first three days (one day while I was reading a newspaper in an open air cafe hahaha) but it shifted to nights and mornings during my last two days there. Didn't stop me from walking from the apartment to Tanah Rata town though - I brought raingear. Suggest you consider doing the same?
There were also no water supply problems, at least while I was there. But to be on the safe side, I boiled tap water and also relied on bottled drinking water.
You mentioned road works - I assume you will be using the Tapah way? May I suggest Simpang Pulai instead? The road there was MUCH MUCH better, easier and more comfortable to drive on and there is less traffic.
I didn't use the Tapah way, so I have no idea, but I did go to the Boh Plantation (courtesy of a mate's female companion who insisted on seeing the place) from Tanah Rata and I did encounter a few road-works-in-progress along the way. Certainly didn't look like they will be completed by the time you are due to report to CH. On stretches that were already completed, the road was wider and smoother, but...
... take Simpang Pulai - you'll incur more mileage, but less stress and the stretch is infinitely more scenic. Anyway, you are on holiday - where and what's the rush, you know what I mean?
Oh, one more thing - the apartment where I stayed was next to a hill slope and yesterday morning, while standing on the balcony bidding farewell to CH I literally watched mist coming... no, rolling down the slope slowly but steadily on its progress towards Tanah Rata. It was so surreal!!! You know, the kind of thing city-bound people can only dream of? I delayed my departure by two hours just to enjoy it.
Heck, if not for prior arrangements, I would have extended my stay. By the way, it was also very misty the day before, especially in the evening.
And you know what - I took in lungfuls of air in the middle of it and it didn't reek of burning smell and didn't give me any respiratory problems, so it was definitely NOT haze!!! Hahaha...
Anything else you would like to know beforehand? In the meantime, enjoy your holiday, SinChee.

Re:Haze - 2005/03/28 15:28
Dear Senna101,
You are totally "cruel" to me here. After your description, I'm now dying to get to CH (to relax)....
Yes, I will be taking the Simpang Pulai route. More for the experience than convenience. (I'm from Singapore). I understand the views, along this route, are also nicer.
Along the Tapah route, I always enjoy the scenery where Lakeside is. I always stop at that location to rest. But, I do hope they get to clean up the lake. It used to be nice to look at, about 20 years ago. But not now with all those ugly sand banks. When I was there, last October, I could see digging works. Hopefully, they clear away those sands.
Many thanks for your advice. Will keep them in mind and hopefully gets to enjoy the "rolling" of the clouds down the mountain, as you put it. As for my haze's concerns, with all those posting (and yours) I have concluded that I can expect clean air and clear sky.
Thanks all.
Rgds
