Driving from KL & then onto Langkawi - 2004/03/21 03:23 We will be driving up from KL on our way to the ferry to Langkawi. We are staying for 3 nights.

Which is the best way to get up to Lagkawi - do we have to go "back" towards Kl to pick up the motorway or is there a way going north?

My fatehr had a map which looked like it is possible to go via the countryside going north but are the roads OK.

We are coming fomr England but are used to driving overseas.

Re: Driving from KL & then onto Langkawi - 2004/03/21 09:07 Hi Chris,

Not sure if you are actually going to Camerons then to Langkawi?

If you are, then get onto the North south Highway and drive towards the north to a turn-off call Tapah. Pay the toll charges and the turn left at the traffic lights and you are headed towards Cameron Highlands.

On the way down, take the same route, exit at the Tapah toll, turn left and get back on the North South Highway and head towards Alor Setar and just before approaching Alor Setar, turn off the exit to Kuala Perlis or Kuala Kedah to take the ferry to Langkawi. You have a choice of either terminal but I would suggest that you use Kuala Perlis Terminal eventhough the ferry ride is a little longer then from Kuala Kedah.

If you are not going to Camerons, then take the North South Highway from KL all the way to Alor Setar (North bound) and do the same thing as in Paragragh 3.

Good luck and cheers. Enjoy your trip to Malaysia.

You can actually pick up a new Malaysian Map at Tourism Malaysia located at the corner of the block facing Trafalgar Square in London.

Re: Driving from KL & then onto Langkawi - 2004/03/22 00:52 Thanks for this info - Yes we are visiting CH for 3 days. I have printed the directiosn & will put them with our tickets. We have a retnal car form KL to the ferry at Kuala Perlis. The guide books suggest that we can just turn up at the ferry & get the next one. The hotel we are staying in in Langkawi will meet us when we arrive. Does anyone know if there will eb anyone who could help us with our luggage onto the boat (we have 2 young children to sort out as well)

Re: Driving from KL & then onto Langkawi - 2004/03/30 12:18 Well Chris,

They sure have people to help you but just negotiate the price as they are touts there. Actually, it is easy to board the ferry as the terminal is similar to the terminal that you take to go to Pulau Tekong in Singapore.

Cheers and have a wonderful mholiday in Malaysia.

Re: Driving from KL & then onto Langkawi - 2004/04/18 14:39 Had a great holiday - we decided to drive North from Brinchang & although it was probably longer (& the lack of sign possts was a bit disconcerting at times) the scenery was so stunning that it was well worth the detour.

Caught ferry fine & had very relaxing 10 days in Langkawi - now back in cold (5c) & wet England!
