CH not so cold now. Sigh.... - 2004/04/16 11:49 Dear Terrano,

since you're a local of CH, thought I'd share this with you.
The weather in CH seems to be getting warmer and warmer everytime I
visit the place. Very sad, coz that's probably the single most important
factor that drew ppl to CH in the first place. Thinking back to my earliest
visit to CH, when I was 5 yrs old, I remember that it was so cold that the
ghee(animal fat) used by the roti canai cook was solidified. I remember staying at Kowloon Hotel in those days, and my cousin brought along his
trustworthy thermometer. He stuck it outside the window sill, and the next morning, the temperature read 7degrees celcius!

Gone are those days, I guess. Really sad......nowadays, when noontime comes, I'd start perspiring. Yikes!

Was wondering if anything could be done to stem this trend....that is,
to reduce the effect of rising temperature. Perhaps, the National Parks Board or the local government body could look into replanting trees that were cut down.

cheers,
Horlicks

Re: CH not so cold now. Sigh.... - 2004/04/16 17:08 Is it just Cameron or the whole world is undergoing global warming? Hot regions are getting hotter and cold regions colder. A friend of mine was in Perth and Sydney last week. She says the temperature was 40 degree celsius and it was autumn!

Terano, Would you have the average monthly temperatures for CH for the last 20 years? A lot of people are saying CH is not as cold as it used to be. Just wondering whether this is a perception or a fact?

Re: CH not so cold now. Sigh.... - 2004/04/16 17:19 If you've seen the CH of yesteryears and compare it to the present,
it's a whole different scenario. Definitely not as many mega hotels in the outskirts of the towns and also not so much land was used for cultivation/farming. I guess the number of trees and the level of forestation/foliage has plummeted tremendously in the past decade.
I really don't think it's a perception that the temp. is rising.

Re: CH not so cold now. Sigh.... - 2004/04/17 11:42 Well, yes and no.

In fact, I do have the figures for the last 20 years and I was also involved in the study on increasing temperature in Cameron Highlands. Before I reveal the conclusion of the study, there are several points to note:

1. There is only one meteo. department in Cameron Highlands monitoring temperature and it is in Sg. Ruil. Thus, official readings mean readings from this station. It is a good reflection of the temperature as a whole but remember that it is really the temperature in S. Ruil

2. There is a difference in temperature in a concrete environment like the town area compare to the outskirts because concrete buildings, roads and stuff tend to absorb heat in the daytime and release it slowly thereby keeping the temperature buffer in the day and raising the temperature at night

3. And as Nancy pointed out, it should be read with the World Temperature (trend).

The study was done by WWF and the conclusion is there is a rise of 0.5deg Celcius now compare to 20 years ago BUT no, Cameron HIghllands is NOT getting hotter because the this rise of 0.5deg is along the line of the rise in the World's temperature.

However, it does not mean that we should let nature takes its course. If Horlicks were to click on to the link "REACH" he can read about what REACH is doing to conserve the environment and hopefully he can contribute in what small or large manner, deeds or even words!
