Water woes in Cameron Highlands - 2002/05/30 20:58 Yes Siree!

It's that time of the year again... the tourist season!. Hotels are full, business is brisk at the restaurants and shops and stalls. Everyone seems happy but at the back of it, the local community has been experiencing dry taps since the 25th May (last Sunday). Even this morning the taps were as dry as the Sahara desert. And the irony of it all is that it has been raining almost daily with a most torrenial rainfall just yesterday afternoon.

This is just too much. It started about 4 years ago when the insufficient water supply was felt. Every tourist season will find locals suffering from dry taps. Complaint after complaint and what do we get? Lame excuses and nonsensical comments.

Re: Water woes in Cameron Highlands - 2002/06/01 11:22 terrano,

Sorry to hear about your situation. I hope things will improve sometime soon but obviously not soon enough for the locals.

Could I ask what are the high and low seasons are? And does it include the weekdays. Thinking of just dropping in with no accom booked and wonder if I'm chancing it on the budget side. Wouldn't mind dorm beds, I think my backpack and I would be happy.

Thanks.

Re: Water woes in Cameron Highlands - 2002/06/02 23:24 HI Mango,

Thanks for you concern on my plight on dry taps and welcome to Camerons.

In reply to your question, if you are the rough and hardened type who can share dormitory beds with visitors around the globe, then you should have no problems coming to Cameron Highlands anytime of the year. The tourist seasons are the school holidays and long weekends. For this, you have to check the local (Malaysian) calender. But tourists of these nature tend to be families and do not rough it out in dormitories. In fact, dormitories usually are occupied by foreigners. Try FATHER'S Guest House in Tanah Rata or Convent's (Barre) Dormitory. It is clean and cheap. There are others but I will leave it for you to chance upon them. I am quite certain you will find accomodations in one of these places anytime.

Re: Water woes in Cameron Highlands - 2002/06/04 18:09 Thanks for the reply and welcome.

It's been a really long time since I've been back. I guess it's not quite the sleepy little town that I remember anymore. It will be fun to rediscover the place.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll check them and others that I've found on the net. Cheers.

Re: Water woes in Cameron Highlands - 2002/08/16 10:15 Hi Terrano,

I'm so impressed of your doing there. Your answers to all people are always very polite and you give serious advices and information. I'm living in Norway and visited CH in last September. I really love the place. I's sad to read about the plans to "develop"/destroy Tanah Rata. I'm afraid CH will loose the attraction it has today. I planned to go back there in January to enjoy the climate and the nature. My profession is environment management and I really worry too many things will be changed to worst forever in a short time. I would like to receive information Reach.
I wish you and all the others good luck for your engagement to protect CH. It's not only for your locals, it's for all of us.
Gernot

Re: Water woes in Cameron Highlands - 2002/10/01 15:25 Hoping to move from England to CH within the next year so I will bring with me some of our English water conservation ideas.

Keep a brick in the toilet system to reduce capacity.
Use water butts to collect roof rain water.
Car washing/gardening with electric pump and butt.
Shower only with a friend.
Use a dishwasher once a week.
Keep the plug in the sink.

Maybe a "save water" publicity scheme on radio and street posters.

Harry.
