If I can only try two steamboat meals...... - 2008/07/12 12:18 Dear all,

If I only have time for two steamboat meals, which restaurant should I go to?

Based of some of the previous threads, I have shortlisted it to Mayflower and Highland Restaurant with the charcoal steamboat. Is Highland restaurant still open?

But I've heard so much more that I can't make up my mind. I'm bringing my whole family plus maid, about 5-6 of us. It seems that Country Lodge is good. Hong Kong restaurant gets good reviews too....and so many more..Gosh, I wish I had a week up there...

How about a vote? Thank you all for your time

Re:If I can only try two steamboat meals...... - 2008/07/12 16:47 Hi Alvin,
The best steamboats are at Brinchang Point. O.K.Tuck is good and its Rm18 per adult. You have choices on the base soup. Herbal, hot and spicy or plain soup. This is located in the center of brinchang couple of doors away from Jasmine Hotel.

Another one is the Oldies & Goodies restaurant. This one is facing the Cactus Valley and Big Red Strawberry Farm. Also Rm 18 per adult. Those in the hotels charges more per head. Oldies & goodies also have roast meats. Hongkong style. They serve noodles and congees also. Price reasonable and quality food. Once you are at brinchang point u will see Star Regency Hotel, on its left there is a slope down and u can see a row of shop houses. If I remember clearly its no. 19. Please enjoy your steamboat with natural cool air. Best wishes to your group.

Re:If I can only try two steamboat meals...... - 2008/07/12 17:09 oh dear, more choices to my list. But thats good..the more the merrier...Thanks Andrew. What about the ones I originally intended to go? Are they good? Seems to be highly recommended on the site. The two that you recommended, are they charcoal based. Cos I really would like to try the charcoal ones.

Hope to hear from more of you guys...

Re:If I can only try two steamboat meals...... - 2008/07/12 17:48 Hi Alvin,
Sorry the two restaurants that I recommended are using gas for their steamboats. Honestly, I have not try the 2 u mentioned. I understand why u prefer charcoal, but I find the gas style is clean and fast. Personally I find no differences on either type because the base soup are all pre-done.

Re:If I can only try two steamboat meals...... - 2008/07/12 21:55 I'm just going to talk from my experience, dear Alvin.

You definitely have to try out the one served at Country Lodge Restaurant which is right opposite of the Shell petrol station in Brinchang town. It's lovely and you will get a huge portion,I bet you can never walk out of the restaurant without holding your tummy with the two hands. The soups were excellent(Tom Yam and Chicken broth)and the service was satisfactory. You wouldn't even need to wave to the waiters in order to get the soups filled. You have my words.

I've dined at Mayflower before too..it was as good as Country Lodge but i wasn't very pleased with the portion served. Highlands Restaurant was an absolute disappointment. I don't know if it's the one that most people recommend as there are, obviously, quite a few with the same name. The one i went for was in Brinchang town, beside KFC if i'm not mistaken. The soups were OK but the chicken was horrific, i can't even call it a fillet as it's like some sort of chicken ribs and..residues. I could do nothing but to stare at it with utmost disgust.

OK tuck's steamboat meal was quite up to the standard too, in my opinion. But i totally hated the way my hub and I were treated..the lady boss seemed to have some kind of attitude problem, i pay for both the food AND service and it's my right to demand for quality service, which wasn't provided. I'm afraid i have to suggest against going there.

Re:If I can only try two steamboat meals...... - 2008/07/13 12:38 Hi Kong and Alvin,

Kong, I agreed with your comments on the lady boss. When my wife and I ask her some questions on the food, she walk away and instead sent her staff to attend to us.

Her service is really lousy, her staff O K lah. Food wise we agreed its good and fresh esp the prawns and meats. But Kong, we been to the T-Cafe, and will never step in again.

Reason was we ordered gado gado and we were surprised that the veges were cold (frozen) and the paste were dry and lumpy (direct from the fridge). After our meal my wife vomited just outside the restaurant. I believe their scones, cakes etc may be fresh and good. Those that are less ordered may not be fresh. I heard a lot about this cafe but my first visit was a disappointment.
