Apple, Pear, Raspberry, Strawberry, Mulberry Etc. All In One - 2008/07/13 23:32 Apparently, Cameron Highlands weather is similar to Northern Queensland (Australia) during early winter and early spring. Even mid winter in Northern Queensland (Australia) is not cold either. It is just nice. If they can plant pear, apple, orange, grapefruit, raspberry, mulberry, strawberry and even certain variety of peach suitable for Northern Queensland and form a multi variety fruit farm allowing visitors to pick the fruits at a certain amount of fee. Why don't Cameron Highlands farmers adopt this idea? Apparently I see that farmers and operators in Cameron Highlands is a bit too profit oriented (or shall I say something similar to greedy) and very very lack of creativity cum innovation. So I hope Cameron Highlands can change for better to attract more tourists! Have a nice day in Cameron Highlands.

Re:Apple, Pear, Raspberry, Strawberry, Mulberry Etc. All In One - 2008/07/13 23:45 It may not be the farmers' fault. The land they cultivate belongs to the government and is on a very short lease. It wouldn't make sense to cultivate fruit trees that take years to fruit. Im comparison, vegetables and flowers have a shorter cultivation cycle. Furthermore, Cameron HIghlands' weather is humid and hence, may not be suitable for certain temperate climate fruit trees. To identify the best fruit trees to plant requires years of R&D and in this regard, Australia is ahead of Malaysia. What works in another country may not work in Malaysia.

Re:Apple, Pear, Raspberry, Strawberry, Mulberry Etc. All In One - 2008/07/13 23:47 Yes, that is very true. If Ba'Kelalan in Kelabit Highlands in Sarawak can have a mandarin orange and apple plantation and they even build a lodge besides the plantation so that the visitors or tourists can pick the apples whenever the orchard is open during daytime. Their business is good and brisk! If Sarawak can do it, why not Cameron Highlands???

Re:Apple, Pear, Raspberry, Strawberry, Mulberry Etc. All In One - 2008/07/13 23:58 That's true Ivan, how long do we have to spend millions of ringgit to import these temperate fruits if Sarawak can do it?? Instead, we should plant it and sell it among Malaysians. If Ba'Kelalan of Sarawak can do it, so do other highlands in Malaysia!
