Re:Steamboat - 2008/03/05 17:57 Dear steamboat lover, you've found the right place to ask this question.(well, yes, i AM one of those steamboat lovers out there whose craze for steamboat will never get satisfied)

I would strongly recommend you the mayflower restaurant if you would like to have a nice, hearty steamboat meal. Besides that, i think the steamboat served at the country lodge hotel in Brinchang should never be left out. It all depends on which town will you be staying in, if you just happen to stay in Tanah rata, mayflower should be just a few steps from your hotel, thus ensuring a convenient meal for you. I've tried highlands(i don't know if i tried the right one, but the name of the one i tried was called cameron highland restaurant, i wonder if one word makes such a difference)

I tried golden win, and don't find it amazing as how most people describe it on this forum. You might want to give it a shot, i'm not an assam fish lover, so it might be quite safe to assume that's the reason it didn't appeal to me at all. Portion wise, country lodge hotel will definitely satisfy your (whatever)humongous appetite, and i shall say it beats all the steamboat restaurants in terms of portion.

So, as a conclusion, you MUST try mayflower and country lodge hotel's steamboat. I didn't get to spend enough time in CH during my last visit, but i had 5 steamboat meals, which i personally consider quite a lot for a 3 nights' stay, not to mention 2 out of 5 of that was at country lodge hotel. I gave them a second visit, so you may have seen how much i love their steamboat, don't you?

P/S: Mayflower might be slightly too crowded somtimes, especially at night due to the amount of foreign tourists in Tanah Rata. Therefore, i think country lodge might seem to be slightly more preferable to me, but well, it's hard to say, most tour groups book their steamboat dinner there and you'll end up shouting to your partner across to table..(due to the noise pollution created by the crowd).

All fresh & worth of money? Sorry for asking too much...cos my gf purposely come back on May from Spore just to see me & have a nice day with me, so i would like to arrange everything nicely for her. Were you trying to imply malaysians make a lot of typing errors?(well, i dare not compromise with that point)

Oh, i'm so glad you granted me the title of ''steamboat king'', i absolutely love it. Thanks, pal.

Yes, tom yam soup is served everywhere in CH, in a steamboat restaurant, of course. You might want to try out the double soup combo, where they put a divider in the middle of the steamboat so you could have a taste of both the soup. I'm not a tom yam soup fanatic, but well, my husband likes it and that's why we have to order both the soup(we were surprised that the tom yam soup served in CH is actually categorised as a vegetarian dish). I'm going to buy some pork and beef fillet for my next visit to CH, it is a disgrace for them not to serve pork and beef. Oh, btw, the vegetables are definitely the freshest that you can ever find in malaysia, vegetables aren't that expensive, so expect to see lots of them on the plate. Price wise, again, it's very subjective and it depends on your budget. I find rm18 per person pretty cheap, but someone actually complained it's way too expensive than what it should be. To be honest, rm18 isn't too much at all, remember that you have to pay for the weather, too.

Btw, i have to keep you informed that i AM a guy, feel free to bring forth a debate about that and i did no typing error for using the term ''husband''.

Hope you will get what i mean. Have a pleasant stay in CH.

Re:Steamboat - 2008/03/07 23:03 I think most restaurants are opened for lunch and dinner. Breakfasts are not likely to be catered for, though.

I'll try to find more and post it on here, however that should be after my 2nd visit on the 19th March.

Re:Steamboat - 2008/03/08 10:32 Update:

Please take note that the Mayflower Restaurant in Tanah Rata is closed till further notice due to their tenancy agreement.

Starbucks Coffee has taken over the premises.

Re:Steamboat - 2008/03/08 14:02 I think you shouldn't be discouraged based on other visitor's impression on the hotel. I had had the chance to grab a look at the hotel rooms when i first went there for steamboat dinner and well, i would only rate it 2 our of 5, on the other hand, i would rate 4.5 out of 5 for Equatorial Hotel. The rooms are rather small, and it has a mouldy smell to me. The TV wasn't functioning well and the bird-cage like bathroom doesn't look good to me either

The good thing about that hotel is they provide you with a huge compound in front of your room(an alternative of a balcony)compared to EQ, where you have to specially request for a relatively small balcony. p/s: i'm a balcony lover, and i always think it's a cool idea to have a tea at the balcony(with the cooling weather, of course)

Oh, i think i've gone off-topic. Anyway, the steamboat dinner there has nothing to do with the hotel rooms at all. They're not fun by the same owner(i think). For your information, that steamboat restaurant has been there for 10+++ years already so i take it as a guarantee of quality.

Re:Steamboat - 2008/03/08 14:06 I mean it isn't RUN(not FUN) by the same owner of the hotel.

To admin, starbucks is not yet a loss to the mankind as it's still in existence. The opposite has happened to mayflower, unfortunately.

I can see you're a starbucks lover, i was addicted to their american baked cheesecake.(i gave it up since i put on 5kg)
