Its been a while since the last reforestation activity and due to the popular demand, we are having Operation Reforestation III this October. Come and join the fun! Whats this all about? : The Chief of Cameron Highlands Online is getting a group of friends up to Cameron Highlands to participate in REACH's reforestation activity. We are extending the invitation to anyone who would be around the highlands that weekend and want to do something different.
When? : 15 October 2006. About 8:00am Where? : Somewhere near Sungai Pallas. We will meet in Tanah Rata before leaving for the site. Duration? : About 4 hours. Transportation? : Will be provided from Tanah Rata / Brinchang to the site. You can drive too if you want. What to expect? : 30 min ride from town to the reforestation site in a landrover. A 350 metres hike up to the site. Plant some saplings, enjoy the scenery, take a few pics and you're back in town feeling good that you have done your part to help the environment. If we have the time, we will try to include a nature walk to Gunung Brinchang. Cheers ----------------------------------------------- Project background (www.reach.org.my) This project was initiated by R.E.A.C.H. in partnership with the Department of Forestry. The project site had been illegally cleared by a local farmer for agriculture activities and was highlighted to the authorities by R.E.A.C.H. in 2001. The farmer was compounded RM500 by the district Office and later charged in court. The Magistrate Court handed him a penalty of RM4,000, which was later increased to RM10,000 by the High Court. Despite these actions, to date, the farmer is still actively cultivating the land much to the dismay of R.E.A.C.H.
The site is located in the Main Range of Peninsular Malaysia with its main forest cover being montane forest. It not only houses diverse biodiversity of flora and fauna but also forms part of the water catchment area for the Sungai Burung drinking water treatment plant. The Sungai Burung water treatment plant supplies drinking water to the population of Brinchang and its surrounding area. Thus, such clearing has an adverse effect not only on the flora and fauna but also to the drinking water quality in Cameron Highlands. To prevent further irreversible damage to the area, a smart partnership was formed between the Forestry Department, R.E.A.C.H. and the community to reforest the cleared land.
The cleared area approximately 15 acres near Gunung Brinchang, which is part of the Ulu Bertam Forest Reserve and Stateland forest, was identified for this pilot reforestation project. For more information, pls visit www.reach.org.my |
