Where to Eat - 2007

ImageIt's that time of the year again! Time to tell us about your favourite dining spots in Cameron Highlands. There has been a lot of new outlets here in the past one year and I have a feeling that this years "Top-10 List" will have some new entries.

This will be your chance to share your knowledge with the rest of the regulars and new visitors to the highlands.

Tell us which outlet should be on our list and why.

Scone and tea in tcafe is definitely not worth trying. Smoke house is the best of all with the garden environment.

My pick would be Palm Leaf Cafe in Brinchang. The polace looks a little run down but they serve very good food.

Restoran Ferm Nyonya in Tanah Rata is also good. try their Tom Yam soup.

Visited Ch, 12-16June.

T-Cafe, I would say is value for money. The beef steak is good and only RM18!
The apple pie is also good.
Char Kuay Teow by a couple in the Pasar Malam is good.
The fried spring roll in Hong Kong resturant(Tanah Rata) is good.
The fried rice in You Hoo resturant(Brinchang) is good.
Wanton mee at Mayflower resturant(Tanah Rata) is good.
Wanton mee, a namesless store, next to a mobile phone shop Hotlink, Brinchang, is good.
The fried chicken and indian lunch set in Bala Chalet is good.

Enjoyed the surroundings of Ye Old Smokehouse, however, I felt that the food is rather ex. 4 scope of ice ceam, one apple pie, 2 scone and tea cost about RM100.

Maybe you won't believe it. I have taste a most delicious cheese cake in Malaysia, what i can say is , the bakery shop located at Cameron Highland.
I have it last week

The shop located at Tanah Rata town, when you just come in to Tanah Rata, you can see it at your right handside. the shop name is "THE BEST BAKARY"
If you walk from bus station, just take a few minute.

It really taste good, the cookie crimps base, the chocolate cheese on the filling, ai.. I dont' really know how to descripe it. I'm so free that day, then just try to walk around the town before I leave. then i found it!

Never Regret to it. the price just RM3.80

I was in Cameron last Saturday. I hadn’t visited the place for a long time. I decided to have lunch at the Cameron Highlands Resort Hotel (ex Merlin Hotel) as I hadn’t been to the place since it was bought over by the YTL Group and underwent a major renovation. To my surprise, the standard of the hotel’s restaurant was quite comparable to the good restaurants in other YTL hotels (namely Ritz Carlton KL’s Tim Sum restaurant and JW Marriott KL’s Shanghainese restaurant).

I had the curry set lunch while my friend had the fried chicken chop with mashy peas. The mashy peas were as good as those you would find in good pubs in the UK and the chicken was excellent (a freshly fried meaty chop – crispy outside, but moist inside). Despite a small lunch crowd (probably due to the restaurant’s hefty prices), the kitchen staff nevertheless put in the efforts in cooking small quantities of quality food.

For those who wish to lunch at an exclusive place, I would suggest the Cameron Highlands Resort Hotel over The Smokehouse. I’ve lunched at The Smokehouse many times, but always found the food lacking in quality. For those who wish to enjoy the ambience of The Smokehouse, afternoon tea and scones would be better value for money than lunch.

Having just returned from the Cameron Highlands, I really have to agree with the writer above as regards The Smokehouse. Whilst the ambience in the garden and cocktails were first class, the dinner was appallingly mediocre. My simple roast chicken was underdone and soggy, and my partner's duck was just sad. Very disappointing. The rest of our stay in Malaysia was culinary heaven!

1)Yong-Teng Cafe, Tanah Rata, opposite Maybank (look out for the blue canopy with small stalls), their pancakes are great and cheap! I had my brunch there 3 days in a row. The couple are hearing impaired but they're very friendly.

2)T-cafe (above Marrybrown's)- Apple pie with ice cream: good! Their cream scones are to my liking. Price is reasonably cheap.

3)Tandoori chicken set with naan still stands at RM7 and they are pretty standard in taste. Restoran Kumar and Seri Brinchang serves them.

I've tried others, such as Downtown's cafe, Restoran Ferm Nyonya, price is reasonable but I find their food abit too salty.

t-cafe is the best place to have your scone at reasonable price and the taste is very very nice, highly recomended. Theres another place to have a good scone with a nice view - Bala's place. But the price is a bit expensive but really worth the price.

Hello there! I would like to recommend the steamboat served at the Lodge hotel..i don't really know the full name, and i am aware that there are quite a few hotels with the word ''lodge'' in their name. For your convenience, the one i went to occupies a comparatively bigger compound(among all the ''lodge'' hotel)..and..it's quite hard to miss it,you would see the nicely decorated walls of the foundation of the hotel(it's sort of built on a cliff..). The second thing i would like to recommend is the food served in the menu of the room service provided by Equatorial Hotel. I was really surprised they serve spaghatiis, fried noodles and fried kueh tiaow which is of such high quality! I'm afraid i have to equate it to those i tasted in Penang! Last but not least, i have to mention the strawberries served with whipped cream which is available at nearly all the strawberry farms in Cameron Highlands. It's a MUST TRY, but unfortunately no one has actually mentioned about it, a sad phenomenon. I personally think there's no point trying dishes like nyonya food or those steaks etc in CH..the following saying would best describe what i'm trying to say--do as the romans do when in rome, in malay--masuk kandang mengembek, masuk ...etc(i've forgotten the whole saying, oops)I have to say that, if you like western food, go to the western countries and have a taste of the most authentic western food. If you would like to try nyonya food, head to Melaka for a hearty meal provided by the babas and Nyonyas. The specialties in CH have to be strawberry based food(strawberry cheese cake etc) and steamboat. Nothing beats having a nice, body warming steamboat at a cooling place like Cameron Highlands. Oh, don't forget about the tea and scones.

On our 2nd visit this year on 17th to 20th March 2008. We found a very good restaurant. "Oldies and Goodies Roasted Restaurant" Well this is a non-halah outlet. Its at Brinchang Point, No. 19 ground floor Jalan Angsana. In case if you are not familiar with road name, its directly opposite the "Cactus Valley" and "Big Red strawberry farm"

When we saw this place we thought it might be expensive to dine there. Next morning we decided to have our breakfast there. We had 2 coffee 2 plates of roasted meat noodles and a bowl of wanton soup. The bill was Rm 18, I sincerely feel it was reasonable. The quality of food was good, clean environment, very friendly boss and staff.

That evening we try their steam-boat. Rm 36 for 2 person. We could'nt finish the food. I understand they serve porridges, rice and lots of side dishes.

Most of our meals for the last trips were at this restaurant. Each meal we tried a different one, Roast duck, roast pork, char siew, roast chicken. You can ask for mixture also. Those who loves such food must try. Looking forward to my 3rd trip this year. By the way I am from Singapore. We took about 8 hours to Cameron highland. I am 56 and my wife is 52 we enjoyed every hour of our trip. We left singapore at 6am and we were at brinchang at 2.30 pm. We had a few toilet breaks. So u wont feel tiring.
